How it works

Laser Panel Splitter, step by step

It cuts an oversized panel into interlocking pieces sized for your machine, then lays them out on bed-sized sheets. Kerf is built into the joints, so the tabs press together instead of rattling.

  1. Upload your panelThe full-size design, however big it is.
  2. Click the outlineThe outer edge of the piece being split. Holes and detail come along with it.
  3. Set your bed and jointsPiece count, split direction, joint style, and your kerf.
  4. DownloadSheets labelled A1, A2, B1 and so on, so assembly is obvious on the bench.

Laser Panel Splitter — common questions

How do I cut a design bigger than my laser bed?

Split it into panels that fit, and join them. The difficulty is never the splitting, it is making the seams mate after the beam has taken material from both faces. This tool generates both halves of every seam from one shared profile so they are guaranteed to be complements.

How is kerf handled?

Applied to the geometry rather than by translating the line. The tab grows and the socket shrinks, each by half the kerf. Nudging the whole line cannot do that and leaves joints that are sloppy in one direction and tight in the other. Set your kerf, usually 0.006 to 0.012 in, and test one seam on scrap first.

What joint types can it make?

Finger joints for a mechanical fit, and plain butt seams where you would rather glue and clamp. Finger joints hold themselves together while the glue sets, which on a large panel is the difference between a two-hand job and a four-hand one.
